How Kids Actually Learn to Read

Published 3 months ago • 1 min read

Watching kids learn to read is nothing short of amazing.

A baby goes from eating books to realizing that you're supposed to hold them and move those pages back and forth to babbling while they pretend to read to unlocking the mysterious code that is all the sounds their native language's symbols make on the page.

It amazes me every time I watch it "click" for an emerging reader.

But how do you teach reading well at home...?

Is there a perfect curriculum? What if you don't remember all the phonics sounds from your 1st grade class? What if your child is frustrated or just not "getting it?" How do you know if you need a reading tutor or if your child is dyslexic?

I have spent countless hours learning about the science of reading, studying how kids learn to read, and teaching my own children to read. Call me a weirdo, but it's a hobby of mine.

Over the summer, I taught a video workshop to some new homeschool moms about exactly how you teach your beginning readers to read.

In it, I cover:

  • How to assess reading readiness & figure out if your child is ready to read
  • What print awareness and very early literacy skills look like in 2-5 year olds.
  • What the process of learning to read looks like start to “finish”
  • How to introduce letter sounds
  • How to play a simple blending game that will help your child go from reading individual letters sounds to sounding out words.
  • How to teach reading at each step of the process using mostly materials you have at home and the stuff included in the workshop kit!
  • What books or programs might help you help your child (and which ones you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on)

Though curriculum can be a helpful tool, I end up talking to lots of parents who feel frustrated with their child's progress (or lack therof) learning to read. I'm convinced part of the frustration is that the parent just doesn't understand where the child is at in the literacy process, what his or her individual stumbling blocks are, and what to do about those!!

If you think your child is ready to learn to read or you're frustrated & feel stuck, this workshop will be so helpful for you!! Plus, as part of a special discount bundle, it comes with my printable phonogram games, cards, and worksheet kit.

I've been thinking a lot about how to describe daily homeschool life to newer homeschooling parents... one of the most common questions I get is: "If it doesn't look like school, what does it look like? What do you do? How do you structure it?" Anchors. Rhythms. Things that happen on a regular basis that are carefully chosen for your individual family and season of life. Things that always happen. (And by always, I mean most of the time. 😂) What anchors are in your days, weeks, and months?...
